Youth teams charge to victory - By Luke Tucker

Strong second half charges from both the Central Coast Crusaders youth league women and youth league men division one sides secured victory over Hornsby Spiders at The Brickpit, Thornleigh on Saturday.

The youth women's match was a fairly even tussle throughout the first half with the scores locked at 17 a piece at the first break and then just a 4 point (28-24) lead giving the Crusaders a leg-up at half-time.

At the main break, coach Jim Pappas called on the Crusaders girls to focus on their defence and the points would come.

And that they did. In a horror third period for the Spiders, they were restricted to just 3 points thanks to an intensive defensive effort by the Crusaders, who notched up 15 points and found themselves up 43-27 with one quarter to play.

Hornsby didn't give up in the final stanza, but in the end it was the low scoring third period that put the game out of reach and secured the 68-46 win for Central Coast.

Ashlee Cockett led the way in offence with a game-high 17 points, but it was the all-round team effort at the defensive end of the court that was the highlight for the Crusaders coach.

"Our main focus is our defence and that's exactly what paid off for us today," said Pappas.

"We've been doing a lot of work on making sure we get our stops and if we can keep working hard on this then the results will continue to go our way," he added
