Wildcats Split Round with Panthers  - Noel Rowsell

With the two Parramatta Wildcats Waratah Basketball League (WBL) teams both enjoying a bye last weekend, local attention switched to Youth League on Saturday afternoon at the Auburn Basketball Centre), where the Wildcats hosted the Penrith Panthers Men and Women. The Wildcats easily won the women's game 67-37, whilst the Panthers grabbed the two points in the men's game with a tight 103-91 victory.

Local fans were stunned by the size of the Panthers line-up in the men's game, with Penrith State League regulars Tom Dawson and Sean Albert both suiting up in the younger age group, along with towering Oregon State College (USA) centre Angus Brandt. Given the lowly status of both teams in this year's competition to date, the eleventh-placed Wildcats looked to be at the mercy of the eighth-placed Panthers, although the game would eventually be decided by just dominant period of play.

The towering Panthers jumped to an early 28-17 lead in the first term and would then hold on grimly as the Wildcats rallied bravely against the odds, often drawing within striking distance through the next three quarters yet not able to rein in the visitor's healthy lead. The women's game was never in doubt for the Wildcats, who also jumped out to an early lead in the first term (16-5) and then kept increasing their margin throughout the game to the final whistle.

Wildcats WBL development players Brianna Gibbs-Manuatu, Jane Wilcox and Sindy Azzi  all relished the weaker opposition, with each grabbing some lengthy court time and more importantly, plenty of points. The two Wildcats Youth League teams are away to the Central Coast Crusaders this Saturday afternoon, whilst the women also back up against the Newcastle Hunters in Newcastle on Sunday.

The two WBL teams are also in Newcastle on Saturday night, playing against the Hunters' WBL women's and men's teams respectively.
