Crusaders get revenge on Panthers By LUKE TUCKER, blacktux media (Tue Apr 21, 2009)

WHEN the NSW state basketball league draw was released for season 2009, Crusaders player-coach Ian ‘Moose’ Robilliard put an asterisks next to their round 6 clash against Penrith marking it as the perfect opportunity to turn the tables on last year’s grand final defeat at the hands of the Panthers.

And that’s exactly what the Crusaders achieved on Saturday evening when they travelled to Penrith Sports Stadium to take on the reigning champions.

Robilliard was unavailable for the grand final re-match, so point guard Eddie Whitmore took the reigns and along with captain Terry ‘TJ’ Johnson, guided the Crusaders to the sweet taste of victory away from home.

“They came out with all guns blazing and before we knew it they were up 9-zip early in the first quarter,” said Whitmore.

“They certainly had the wood on us during that first period but we turned things around in the second where everything just seemed to click into gear for our guys.

“That second period was definitely the crucial part of the game for us and looking back – it was that second quarter effort that set us up for the win.” Whitmore added.

On the back of their gutsy second period, the Crusaders took a 3-point (40-37) lead to the half-time break.

The second half was a true grand-final style tussle with the lead changing a number of times and the game still swaying either way. However, it was the experience of guards Johnson, Whitmore and Noman Shoaib that helped steady the visitors and get them over the line to finish 96-87 victors.

The two sides next meet at the Crusaders’ fortress – Bridgecoast Stadium, Terrigal on Saturday 16 May. This will be a fiery clash not to miss.
