Panthers Fleece the Rams - by Noel Rowsell

The two senior basketball teams from the Penrith Basketball Association have both won tough games in Dubbo on Saturday night,  with the women winning by 59-53 and the men 107-92.

Dubbo Basketball Association President Nick Hubbard said "We had a great crowd to welcome the Panthers - nearly a full house and they saw two great games". "We (Dubbo) came out really hard in the early stages of the women's game and I think a lack of game fitness may have been our downfall" said Hubbard. "Both teams had their chances to win but Penrith snuck past us on the night".

The men's game was a fast-paced, sometime hot-headed contest which kept the crowd enthralled until the final whistle. Rams head coach Phil Morrow said "They (Penrith) are a very good side but I thought we were definitely in it with a chance - and we led for most of the first half". "Unfortunately, we (Dubbo) got into foul trouble in the second half and lost two of our best players in the third and fourth quarters respectively. Three of Penrith's 'young guns' stole all of the limelight on the night, with Josh Morehead dropping an impressive 33 points, ahead of rookies Sean Albert 20 and Tom Dawson 19.

The Panthers host the two senior Bathurst Goldminers teams at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre, Herbert Street Cambridge Park this Sunday, with the women's game tipping off at 11am and the men's game at 1pm.

Jets Evade a Magic Revival - by Noel Rowsell

The Hawkesbury Jets have scored a narrow 91-78 win over the lowly-ranked Glebe Magic on Saturday night at the Hawkesbury Indoor Sports Centre (HISC), South Windsor, in front of a small but enthusiastic crowd.

The Magic are basically a Youth League team and had been predicted to finish as likely wooden-spooners in this year's competition but the young Sydney-siders hung tough against the 2009 favourites to grab a respectable score - for them.

The Jets led 27-16, 48-31 and 70-48 at the first three breaks in play, before the Magic stormed through the final quarter to reduce the final margin to just 13 points. Jets head coach Barry Sutherland said "It was ugly - we (the players) got into cruise control and then it was out of my hands". "We were never in any trouble, we led by more than thirty points at one stage and I ran everyone so it was probably an ugly game we had to have - and now we've had it".

The Hawkesbury Youth League men's team began the day's action against the Ryde Bulls but could not hold out the visitors on the day, falling 74-67. The two Hawkesbury teams are at home again this Saturday, with the Youth League men playing the Bankstown Bruins at 4pm and the State League men playing the Northern Suburbs Bears at 6pm.

STATE LEAGUE: Hawkesbury Jets 91 (Graham Godwin 20 points, Robert Crane 16, Paul Skinner 10, Ben Hawkesley 10) def Glebe Magic 78 (Daniel Estevens 28)

YOUTH LEAGUE: Ryde Bulls 74 (Peter Flint 21 points) def Hawkesbury Jets 67 (Ethan Wagener 15 points, Shannon Klein 11)

Macarthur Heat 94 def Springwood Scorchers 49 no result received

Scorchers Flame Out Against the Heat and Goldminers - by Noel Rowsell

The Scorchers State League men had an even tougher outing against the Macarthur Heat in Minto, with the home team recording a crushing 94-49 victory.

Scorchers head coach Vince Browning said "We fell on our own sword with a combination of absent players and poor attitude from those at the game contributing to our own fate". "We're definitely a better team than a 50-point flogging would indicate but I will say the Heat are as good as the Hawkesbury Jets, so they are going to be tough for everyone this year".

The State League men appeared to have a good opportunity to return to the winner's circle next Saturday, when they head to the Glebe Police Citizen's Youth Club to play the lowly-ranked Glebe Magic.

Unfortunately, this game now appears to have taken on a new dimension, with the Magic putting in a very creditable performance last Saturday against the powerful Jets and losing by just 13 points. The Jets simply annihilated the Scorchers in the first round of the season and coach Browning will undoubtedly need to have everyone on deck and also playing at their best to hold out the Magic on their home court.

STATE LEAGUE: Macarthur Heat 94 def Springwood Scorchers 49 (Keith Browning 12 points, Rimon Abboud 11) YOUTH LEAGUE: Bathurst Goldminers 58 Trent Grantham 16 points, Tim Fogarty 14, Adam Shackleton 12) def Springwood Scorchers 52 (Joshua Warren 16 points, Zac Bryson 9, Leo Solomon 9) Action photos from the NBL, WNBL, WABL, SL, WNWBL and NWBL can be viewed at www.photoexcellence.com.au
