Panthers Fleece the Rams - By Noel Rowsell

The Penrith Panthers senior men's team has returned home from their road trip west to Dubbo with a 94-74 win over the Dubbo Rams on Saturday night, in round eight of the 2009 NSW State League Basketball competition.

The Panthers had defeated the Rams by fifteen points in their first encounter this year and despite the higher margin this time around, put up an even better showing against the Panthers in from of their home fans.

Panthers head coach Jeff Cooper was full of praise for the home team, stating "they (Rams) are very competitive this year and much better than in 2008". "It (Saturday night) was an interesting game, which got very physical at times, but we got a winning edge when Nick (Kennedy) and Craig (Blatch) knocked down a succession of clutch three-point shots".

"Josh spent plenty of time on the floor (literally) and they were obviously very wary of his presence in the game, especially after he dropped 32 points on them in the first game", said Cooper. "Yet, in spite of the heavy defensive attention, he still knocked down another 29 points tonight so I think he won the battle - again".

The Panthers led 21-13, 46-32 and 67-51 at the end of the first three breaks in play before eventually running out winners by 20 points. The Penrith Men have a bye this weekend, while the Penrith women head south to play the Wagga Wagga Blaze on Saturday afternoon.

Jets Burn Off the Heat - By Noel Rowsell

The Hawkesbury Jets senior men's basketball team has crushed the visiting Macarthur Heat 88-67 on Sunday afternoon at the Hawkesbury Indoor Sports Centre (HISC) South Windsor, in round eight of the 2009 NSW State League Basketball competition.

The unbeaten Jets (8-0) were featuring in yet another "Game of the Round" this season as the Heat (6-2), another of the potential challengers or perhaps pretenders in Pool D, presented themselves for examination and testing.

Once again, the Jets would prove triumphant, taking advantage of some poor ball retention and offensive options from the Heat to snatch a 21-point win. Amazingly, the margin between the two teams, just minutes out from the half time break, was a narrow three points before the Heat suffered an amazing melt-down, largely due to their own errors.

The Jets capitalised in full, surging to a 44-28 lead at the break and looking to have already established a winning margin.

The visitors kept plugging away doggedly during the second half but never threatened the margin as the Jets mirrored their first half haul of 44 points to keep the game under wraps.

This coming weekend promises plenty of action at both ends of the competition ladder, with the Jets (now 9-0) travelling to inner Sydney to play the sixth-placed Glebe Magic (2-6) at 5.30pm at the Glebe Police Citizens Youth Club, then returning home to the HISC at 1pm on Sunday, for yet another Game of the Week against the second-placed Illawarra Hawks (8-1). The Hawks put the Springwood Scorchers to the sword last weekend and appear to present the biggest (and perhaps only) challenge to the Jets supremacy in Pool D this season.
