Scorchers Experience Highs and Lows - Noel Rowsell

The fifth-placed Springwood Scorchers senior men's team has split their results in round thirteen of the 2009 NSW State League Basketball competition, defeating the eighth-placed Maitland Mustangs 88-71 in Maitland on Saturday night, then falling 88-44 to the third-placed Illawarra Hawks on Sunday morning at the Blaxland High School Basketball Stadium (BHSBS).

Scorchers head coach Vince Browning took a very small squad north to Maitland but the visitors found little danger from this year's likely wooden-spooners, leading from the opening whistle. "It was freezing in the stadium" said coach Browning, "so I just kept rotating the squad to ensure everyone stayed warm." "Everyone played well and I was very pleased with the effort". Sunday's game started positively for the Scorchers, who led 10-8 at the end of a very dour first quarter against the higher-placed Hawks.

The home team kept the visitors in check until just minutes before the half time break but subsequent sloppy work on both offence and defence would see the Scorchers implode in spectacular fashion.

The Hawks staged a fourteen-point turnaround in a matter of minutes, storming to a 33-20 lead at half time then continuing that momentum, throughout the third term, to literally blast the Scorchers out of the game. Coach Browning patrolled the sidelines powerlessly as the Hawks kept increasing the points margin between the two teams, with the visitors eventually romping away for a 44-point win.

"We just didn't handle their trap (defence)" said coach Browning. "We see this type of defence all the time but we just didn't run anything against it - and that killed us". The Scorchers host the sixth-placed Glebe Magic at the BHSBS at 7.30pm this Saturday night and will be looking to grab a convincing win over the fledgling inner-Sydney association.

Hawks crush Scorchers - Noel Rowsell

The fifth-placed Springwood Scorchers senior men's team made a solid early start to their clash with the third-placed Illawarra Hawks on Sunday afternoon at the Blaxland High School Basketball Stadium, leading 10-8 at the end of a very dour first quarter but eventually fading under pressure to fall 88-44 on the day. The Scorchers had in fact kept the Hawks in check until just minutes before the half time break but subsequent sloppy work on both offence and defence would see the home team implode in spectacular fashion. The Hawks staged a fourteen-point turnaround in a matter of minutes, storming to a 33-20 lead at half time then continuing that momentum, throughout the third term, to literally blast the Scorchers out of the game.

Illawarra Hawks 88 (B Bonham 25 points, J Goode 15, J Micaleff 14, B Dragun 11)  def Springwood Scorchers 44 (Josh Stevenson 12 points, Lee Van Hoogenvest 10, Keith Browning 9)
