Background Information

Basketball NSW and Basketball Australia have combined together to organise the "National Intensive Training Centre Program."

In the past there have been similar programs, which originated from the National Junior Development Program (ie NJDP),

and more recently have been known as the Blue Star or Waratah programs.

The Basketball NSW NITCP operates under the guidance of the NSW State NITCP Head Coach,

Peter Lonergan who works full time with Basketball NSW.

What is the aim of the NITCP?

The aim of Basketball Australia’s National Intensive Training Centre Program is to identify outstanding basketball athletes,

aged between 14-17 years, and develop their mental skills, individual skills and team concepts which will enable them to

compete successfully at National and International level.

"The program is aimed at developing the individual."

Who is Eligible?

The program is open to all Registered Basketballer’s in New South Wales aged between 14 and 17 years of age in the year of operation.

A maximum of up to sixty (60) athletes, State wide, are on scholarship in any one year. Scholarships are for 12 months only.

N.B For the 2007/2008 squad, athletes need to be born in the years 1991 to 1994.

Selection Criteria

SUBJECTIVITY IS AN UNAVOIDABLE ELEMENT OF SELECTION TO A NITCP SQUAD

  • Athletic ability e.g speed, height, quick hands and strength
  • Desire to become a national player
  • Potential to be socially compatible and display a sense of "team ethic" within a group
  • Demonstrated attitude to become an exceptional basketball player
  • Be highy receptive to coaching
  • Demonstrated desire to succeed not only in Basketball, but in educational, vocational and personal life
  • Oustanding desire and commitment to working hard at improving mental, physical and basketball skills

The Selection Process

The athlete's potential to meet the selection criteria is assessed by the State NITCP Head Coach through;

  • Observation and evaluation of the athletes performance at club games
  • State development squad camps
  • State Squad selection trials
  • Specific NITCP camps
  • Performance at National Championships
  • Consultation with Club and NITCP Network Coaches

What does the NITCP entail?

Basically it is broken down into fifty (50) hours of team concepts, not games, fifty (50) hours on individual instruction,

and eighteen (18) hours in the sport sciences.

Scholarship holders will be required to attend set training camps (up to 4 live-in camps), scheduled events and any

NITCP related activities. Athletes will also be required to attend individual visits with the State NITCP Head Coach and/or Network coaches.

They will also be required to adhere to a "code of conduct," maintain a training diary and sustain a satisfactory level of

achievement at School. Failure to meet these obligations may see an athlete’s scholarship reviewed and consequently withdrawn.

How is the NITCP organised?

The NITCP is organised by the NSW State NITCP Head Coach, Peter Lonergan.

The basic requirements, as listed above, are scheduled into a workable time frame and designed not to conflict with major

events for the age group. The time frame is October to August, and looks to best fit within School, Association and

New South Wales Basketball calendars.

Who sets the NITCP?

The program is handed down from Basketball Australia and the nine (9) State NITCP Head Coaches from around Australia.

The curriculum is passed from National Team Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and AIS Coaches to the State NITCP Head Coaches.

Patrick Hunt (National Manager/ Player and Coach Development) oversees the program for Basketball Australia.

Similarly, the Sport Sciences are formulated from the National perspective.

Peter Lonergan (NSW NITCP Head Coach) sets the NSW NITCP.

Pathways

The NITCP offers a direct career path from NITCP to AIS to National junior and senior team selection, including NSWIS,

State Leagues, ABA, WNBL and NBL. The NITCP offers professional coaching at the junior level.

It offers access to National programs far easier than other competitions or instruction. It is a direct link with the best in every state.

It is monitored by Basketball Australia, and offers a talent base for high level senior programs, competitions.

Is it a State Team Program?

No.

There will be some overlap between athletes who have potential and are being developed in the NITCP and those who go

on to represent their State. If the NITCP does its job then there should be an obvious overlap but it is not the same program.

The NITCP is a development squad designed to help the individual. The other is a State team program that represents

New South Wales and competes at the Australian Championships.

But our players already get enough coaching!

Some people believe our players already receive ample team development with their respective club, school, and association

and state teams. The NITCP offers the individual development that our teams find hard to fit into their competitive programs.

There’s too much on!

Time needs to be organised for one and all. Priorities have to be drawn. The NITCP has a clear direction, Individual Development,

encompassing skills as opposed to teams chiefly concerned with winning and losing.

The individual deserves and needs individual instruction, direction and development. This may result in the forgoing of some

other basketball commitments for the long-term benefit.

How do I become involved and apply?

Any athletes aged between 14 and 17, in the following year are invited to apply.

For the 2007/2008 squad, athletes need to be born in the years 1991 to 1994.

***Applications for players are available for Download at the top left hand side of this page

How can coaches become involved?

Any coach can become involved in the program. Coaches who are actively involved in the Program are offered instruction and professional development to service the program.

The NITCP offers coaches through-out NSW exposure to National Coaches and the National philosophy.

It is the best vehicle for coaching development in NSW, offering a clear pathway for coaches from Association programs to high level junior and senior programs.
