BASKETBALL NSW COACHING DEPARTMENT

LEVEL 1 & LEVEL 2 COACHING COURSES

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

PRINTABLE VERSION

Basketball NSW offers the two Australian Sports Commission (ASC) National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) recognised coaching courses. These are the Basketball Australia developed level 1 and Level 2 basketball specific coaching courses. Persons interested in completing these certificate courses should refer to the information provided about those courses on the BNSW web site.

In some cases, certain candidates for Level 1 or Level 2, due to their competence and experience, may be considered for equivalency recognition for all or part of the Level 1 and/or Level 2 basketball coaching course. Appropriate candidates may be former or current players from WNBL, NBL, ABA, State League or national junior or senior teams who have received extensive quality coaching, who can substantiate that history and who are actively involved in coaching. Equivalency recognition for general coaching principles units of the course may be extended to people with tertiary qualifications in sport who have completed these elements as part of their formal training and who can substantiate those qualifications.

It is important to emphasise that recognition of prior learning will only be given to candidates for their ability to coach and teach the individual and team concepts of basketball and not their ability to demonstrate or execute the skills of the game. That is, the coaching course RPL requirement is the demonstration of the ability and experience to coach the game, rather than to play the game.

Candidates for RPL must be able to demonstrate and substantiate their competence in all components of the Level 1 and/or Level 2 basketball coaching courses. Recognition of prior learning may be assessed by personal interview and/or by observation of the candidate coaching at camps, games and practice sessions and/or by completion of written and submitted assessment tasks and projects. Candidates for RPL assessment may be required to attend camps or training sessions as specified by BNSW for assessment. In the case of recognition of prior learning for coaching principles components, the provision of proof of completion of the particular elements involved is required. Eg. copies of certified academic transcripts, subjects and topics studied and completed, certificates of completion etc

All applications for RPL will be assessed against the Level 1 or Level 2 competency standards. There is no prior guarantee that full or partial RPL will be granted when a request and submission is made.

Coaches with the following qualifications/experiences may be eligible for RPL for all or part of the Level 1 or Level 2 coaching courses:

  • PE/Coaching Degree
  • Completed ASC Coaching General Principles Level 2 Course through an ASC approved agency.
  • Overseas qualified coaches.
  • Coaches with extensive coaching experience at the required level.

Assessment Principles that an RPL application is measured against are:

Validity - is the evidence relevant to the competency required

Authenticity - is the evidence a true reflection of the candidate’s competence

Sufficiency -is there enough evidence to demonstrate competence.

Currency - is the evidence recent (within 4 years is recommended)

Any person wishing to make a general application for RPL should contact the Coaching Department at Basketball NSW and obtain a copy of the Level 1 or Level 2 Basketball Coaching Course curriculum that details the specific course content that they must present substantiation evidence to cover.

RPL candidates who satisfy all requirements of the relevant course and the RPL process may be approved by the relevant state director of coaching or nominee as appropriate. Successful candidates will be endorsed by the state director of coaching and may then be granted certification.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and the BNSW Level 2 Coaching Course Components
