Integrated/Separate Coaching Principles:
The Level 0 Coaching Principles are integrated into this course.
Nominal Duration:
Theory & Practical: Three (3) hours
The practical coaching components are incorporated into the course and will include time spent “on court” with the course presenter during the sessions.
Target market:
The course is designed for club level beginner coaches. The potential target market is club coaches, parents, teachers, ex-players, current players and senior secondary students.
Payment of training program fees:
All participants must pay the course fee before commencing the course. Course fees will include:
- Level 0 Basketball Coaching Resources & Workbook;
- Costs such as lecturer fees and facility hire.
Enrolment Pre-requisites:
Entry pre-requisites
Participants are not required to have completed any other courses as a pre-requisite for this course and no practical experience is necessary.
Physical screening check
Participants should have a personal fitness level that will enable them to physically complete the practical requirements of the course. Course coordinators reserve the right to request proof of fitness from a medical practitioner. Participants who are unable to meet this requirement will undertake alternative activities during the practical components of the course.
Pre-course study/preparation
There is no specific pre-course study required.
However, it is suggested that participants would gain value from familiarising themselves with the Australian Sports Commission’s Beginning Coaching manual prior to the course.
Age of entry into the program
Minimum age for course entry is sixteen (16) years.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Candidates may apply for RPL for all or parts of the course. Candidates will be required to document their prior learning in writing, attaching relevant copies of certificates or academic transcripts, and submit it to the State Coaching Director. The candidate may be required to further demonstrate their expertise in a particular area by written, oral, practical demonstration or interview. All applications for RPL will be assessed against the Level 0 competency standards by the State Coaching Director. Coaches with the following qualifications/experiences may be eligible for RPL:
- Physical Education/Coaching Degree.
- Completed Australian Sports Commission Coaching Principles Level 1 Course through an Australian Sports Commission approved agency.
- Overseas qualified coaches.
- Coaches with extensive coaching experience at the required level.
Candidate assessment
There is no final written exam. Candidates will be assessed during the course on the following:
- participation;
- written worksheets;
- role-playing; and
- demonstration of coaching technique.
- The course presenter will assess candidates' participation and role-playing during the course. Written worksheets and teaching demonstrations (peer assessment) require; a pass mark of at least 70%. Any participant who fails to attain the pass requirement of any part of the course may repeat the assessment component of that module. Completed course evaluation worksheets should be submitted to the course presenter at the completion of the course.
Candidate certificates
The Course presenter will provide Basketball NSW with details of candidates who successfully meet the
requirements of the course. Basketball NSW will provide Level O Basketball Coaching Certificates for
successful candidates.
